This desert town in the south-east of Morocco has the blocky, terracotta-colored buildings so common in this part of the world, and borders one of the world’s most spectacular landscapes. Merzouga lies on the edge of Erg Chebbi, a monumental series of sand dunes that reach heights of 160 meters, a huge stretch of sand dunes south of town. It’s an amazing sight, especially as the dunes change color in the setting sun from shades of gold to orange, pink and purple. The biggest reason why tourists come to Morocco is to visit the Sahara desert. Riding on a dromedary and sleeping under the stars on the desert will make you feel like you are in some kind of fairytale movie. There is nothing more romantic than watching the sunset on the Sahara.
Dreamy shots of girls running through sand dunes in colorful dresses, groups of camels walking atop a sand dune with the sun setting in the background, luxurious tented camps laid out as if it’s a Vogue photo-shoot. You have seen the beautiful pictures all over your social media feed and have decided to spend the night in the Moroccan desert, so if you’re planning to visit Morocco, there’s one experience that stands out from all the rest, a night in the Sahara cozily nestled between sand dunes while looking at the stars. Spending a night under the stars in the Sahara Desert is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity you’re unlikely to experience anywhere else in the world.
Your hotel /Riad in Merzouga
We will pick you up you from your hotel in Merzouga, and lead you where you will meet your camel to Trek through the desert, over the red dunes, until all you see is sand and sky, and the quiet is only broken by the occasional snort of the camels and the soft sound of their steps on the sand. The camel ride takes you deep into the desert. As you are being led on a camel through the great orange sea of the sand dunes, you will stop (occasionally halfway) for the mesmerizing view of the sunset, nothing around you, just the sun to warm you in those last hours of the day. Indeed, this will be an opportunity to find out how people used to travel over the Sahara. Upon arrival at the camp, you will be welcomed with a cup of tea and then you can go around and enjoy the quietness of the desert. Get ready for a Moroccan dinner served under the stars next to the campfire. After dinner, there will be a drum show performed by the staff at the camp. Furthermore, you will be well-placed to enjoy the stars, shooting stars and the milky-way.
In the morning, If you wish to rise with the dawn to watch the sun beginning its daily an arc with a cool blue morning sky as it illuminates the desert shadows before becoming a glowing ball of fire then your desert camp hosts will wake you up very early to witness it don’t forget to take iconic photographs for the gram. After your breakfast, you will ride your camels back to Merzouga at around 8 AM where our 1-night camel ride in a desert camp ends.
