Although it may no the most popular location to commence Sahara Desert trips and is a solid 10h drive plus it takes a minimum of 3 days if you would still like to have the desert experience and cover most places then this Agadir to Merzouga trip is the ideal solution.
NB: Given the huge amount of driving required to visit Merzouga and regardless of whether you visit from Marrakech, Agadir or Fes, expect a very full day of driving there and back. We highly suggest a 4 to 5 days trip.
Your hotel /Riad in Agadir
6/7 am ( depends on which season)
Welcome to Morocco! Morning departure from Agadir early morning with an interesting stop to enjoy the old ramparts of Taroudant city. Then, continue to Taliouine known as the produced town for Safran, it is the heart of the saffron growing area of Morocco ”Saffron Cooperative” and carries on to Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah, the largest Kasbah in Morocco. We will stop at the famous Kasbah Ait Benhaddou, 30 kilometers from Ouarzazate. it is one of the most intriguing red earth castles lining the ancient road of the Kasbahs and is a UNESCO World Heritage site, then we make our way to Ouarzazate, “the Hollywood of Africa” the town has one of the biggest studios, the homes of the wealthy and powerful, has been the backdrop to many Hollywood blockbusters and major historical television programs, including Gladiator and Lawrence of Arabia. If you are a fan of A Game of Thrones you will recognize it (The series has used a number of locations around Morocco including Essaouira.)
Check into your Riad/Hotel where you will be accommodated with dinner and breakfast.
After breakfast in the hotel, Your most vivid memory of the Sahara desert tour will be today as we drive back through the “Road of the thousand Kasbahs” – the fascinating “sandcastles”. We will continue on our journey to stop at Kalaat Mgouna, “The Roses city” known for roses and its annual festival during the roses harvest in May, and then continue to Dades valley and Tinghir where we will visit Todra valley. Watch the panoramic views of the old mud Berber villages overlooking the valley. Get to the Gorge and walk under the 300m high red cliff, where many Rock-climbers come to enjoy their preferred sport. Continue our trip to Erfoud and Rissani where we have lunch; afterward, we leave for the village of Merzouga, where your camel will be awaiting you. An hour’s camel ride weaving along the tops of the dunes brings you to your accommodation tonight a typical Berber camp, with its Bedouin-style tents and thick Moroccan carpets to keep the sand from between your toes. Take as many shots as you can at the mysterious sand-sea of the Erg-Chebbi.
Here you will spend your night while watching the twinkling stars, or if you prefer, in a traditional Berber nomad tent.
It’ll be a remise not to rise with the sun as it begins its glorious route for another day. If you wake up at first light, take a seat on the sand dunes and watch the sunrise slowly and hang in the dusty summer skies for a moment or two. We will return to a local hotel, where a welcome hot shower and breakfast awaits. then leave for Rissani (once Sijilmassa) – the foundation of the Alaouite dynasty, the current ruling family. With most of the women veiled, and men hooded, this is a very traditional Moroccan town. We’ll continue driving towards Agadir via Alnif, Tazarine, Nkob, and Agdiz. We will enjoy the sightseeing of the fascinating Draa Valley which has hundreds of Berber Kasbahs; so as to continue to Taznakht, Taliouine and arrive Agadir after sunset.

First and foremost, the natural beauty of the Sahara Desert is unparalleled, and this tour allowed us to fully immerse ourselves in its awe-inspiring landscapes. The vast dunes, the ever-changing colors of the sand, and the breathtaking sunsets and sunrises are memories I will cherish forever. The camel ride through the Erg Chebbi dunes to reach our desert camp was a surreal and unforgettable adventure.
Our guide, Ahmed, was not only knowledgeable but also incredibly friendly and accommodating. His passion for the desert and its culture was evident in the stories and insights he shared along the way. He made us feel safe and well-informed throughout the trip, ensuring that we got the most out of our experience.
The accommodations in the desert camp were surprisingly comfortable, with cozy Berber-style tents that provided a glimpse into the local way of life. The campfire, traditional music, and starry desert sky made for a magical evening, and the warm hospitality of the camp staff left a lasting impression.
The food served during the tour was delicious, with a variety of traditional Moroccan dishes that delighted our taste buds. It was a true culinary journey, and I appreciated the effort to introduce us to the flavors of the region.
The itinerary was well-organized, offering a perfect balance between adventure and relaxation. The visit to local villages and the opportunity to interact with the Berber communities added depth to the experience and allowed us to gain insight into their way of life.
In summary, the 3-day desert tour from Agadir to Merzouga was a life-changing adventure. It provided a deep connection with the desert, its culture, and the people who call it home.
